Solving Australia’s Innovation Challenge

Australia is recognised globally as a world leader in research and innovation. As a nation we have yet to realise our full potential, we are missing the translation engine in our innovation ecosystem. The Australian Innovation Exchange (AIX) is building this capability, translating Australia’s innovations into products and services to serve global markets, delivered by Australian technology companies from within our national economy.

Our Vision + Stranded Technology Story

History of Australian Innovation in Context

What we do is … Stories of projects

Serving All Ecosystem Players

Commercialisation is struggling to keep up with research and the pace of innovation. Industry investment has sustained our research sector and our local innovation ecosystem for decades. The outcome has created a world-leading research sector, and a highly innovative entrepreneurial culture. Innovation is not a charity, to be sustainable it requires a supply, and demand, and a market to transact within. Commercialising this capability will benefit the entire innovation ecosystem.

Researchers

Australia is home to many of the world’s largest primary producers who invest significantly in our local innovation ecosystem. While this investment has created and sustained our world-leading research sector, many of this world-leading research is failing to reach the market. As a result, funding sources are diminishing, talent is becoming increasingly scarce, while demand for new innovation continues to grow. Researchers are seeking access to real world market challenges and funding for sustaining research programs.

Industry

Industry is transforming to meet society’s demand for a sustainable future. Solutions come from the application of technology. ESG (Environment, Social and Governance) is the #1 issue across industry. The majority of innovative research to address these challenges is not visible, or commercially available, limiting access to the latest technology. Industry operators can no longer sustain direct research investment, and are looking for collaborative solutions to their greatest challenges.

Investors

There is significant investment capital seeking technologies for investment. Australian innovation struggles to reach investment readiness and can be difficult to find. Industry demand for innovation is difficult to quantify, and is fragmented across primary industry sectors. The Australian Innovation Exchange is aggregating industry demand, uncovering stranded innovation that could meet industry needs, and identifying commercial pathways to attract investment support for commercialisation.

Innovators

Innovative companies – by their nature – have businesses that are built on the commercial viability of the market. Collaboration between Australian research and innovative SMEs is challenged by the investment demand of research and timeframes for Return on Investment. Traditional support for innovation has centred around inhouse R&D. There is a strong shift towards cross-industry experience to keep pace with the rate of change. Innovative technology companies provide the missing link as the translation partners.

Crossing the Chasm

AIX supports Australian technology companies as the translation engine, the vehicle to cross the research ‘valley of death’, productising and commercialising our local innovation

Our Vision for the Future

Delivery of innovation via local technology companies will capitalise on the sustained investment into Australia’s research and innovation ecosystem; generating a return on investment for the benefit of our national economy. The translation of innovation via suppliers of products and services will accelerate local commercialisation, improve the visibility of innovation and technology delivery to market, increase market access to new technology, enhance local skills, enable cross-industry collaboration and attract greater industry investment for future innovation.
